Seventy eight years ago, a doughnut company was founded in the city in which I reside. It was the beginning of Krispy Kreme. This morning, this confectionary brand had a birthday party. The entire community was invited to participate in the celebration. A Saturday morning of music, children’s games, dancing, NASCAR celebrities, and free doughnuts were offered. ----Free doughnuts?!! I marked my calendar and made sure I got there!
In conjunction with this merriment, there was a showing of several fine specimens from the Antique Automobile Club of America. It was a delightful portfolio of period motor cars with a wide array of makes, models, and manners of restoration. The sights of real chrome, wide white walls, and hood ornaments abounded. One could easily sense the pride of the participants as you meandered through the lot. Polished, primped, and pretty, they were. Each whispering of a by-gone era.
It was a family event. Families were there in abundance. Laughter was plentiful. All seemed to be enjoying the various forms of entertainment and rides. With the speaker system projecting pop music over the neighborhood, many a dance move was sparked.
What an odd combination: old cars + doughnuts...I thought to myself. Somehow or another, it worked. For a Saturday morning in July, it provided the community with a way to connect---to share stories, food, and camaraderie. We need that. Such builds pride and a sense of belonging.
“That’s the solution”, I thought to myself. “Cars + doughnuts = fellowship!”
I reached for another doughnut.
This was a Moment in America.
