Time tends to be marked by events in our lives: birth, first day of school, graduation, and on. Perhaps one of the most joyous occasions is that of a wedding. Not only is it a special event for the matrimonial couple, but also for the fortunate guests. Recently, I was counted among the latter.
As the saying goes, “Friends are the family we choose for ourselves.” I am most blessed to have crossed paths with a dear soul over 25 years ago. From moment one, we spoke the same language. -- Often, finishing sentences for one another. We are both extremely passionate about design and the value of detail. She is a true friend. One who understands me. I call her, “Sis”.
When she invited me to her daughter’s wedding, I instantly responded with affirmation. Not only did I want to share this very special moment with her and her family, but I knew it would be one of those milestone events in life. One to remember.
That it was.
Upon arriving at the Chesapeake Bay family estate, one was greeted with classic southern hospitality: an offering of iced tea. With a wait staff sporting black ties and red suspenders, the lawn was a buzz. What a storybook setting it was! The mighty Rappahannock River formed the backdrop for the multi-peaked tent housing tables set for divinity. Simply stunning. Every detail was complete: fresh garden flowers of peach roses and ranunculus, linen table cloths, and personalized place cards of driftwood. Beauty abounded. As an addict of understated finery, I was instantly intoxicated.
Late in the afternoon, a small jazz band serenaded as the bride and groom assembled in the perfect placement on the property. The stage was simple, but spoke with the elegance that only a master architect can render. The large “V” created by the innate hillsides allowed the guests to witness this special occasion with the sun setting over the water.
Guests were elegantly attired. Even the family dog sported a black tie. This is what special memories are made. After a culinary feast was served by a beautifully choreographed wait staff, a multi-piece band arrived to play tunes from our memory books as well as current times. Before long, I found myself spinning, shaking, and stomping on the dance floor.
As a “Fred Astaire” wannabe, only the allure of wedding cake could take me from such a scene. It was a taste of heaven. “Sis” had made it. Rich. Creamy. Fresh. I wanted to disappear with a layer or two of the multi-tiered masterpiece. What a way to crown such a spectacular evening!!!
More than anything, there was a feeling among this assembled lot that I rarely sense. It could be viewed in the manner in which people spoke, stood, and interacted with one and another. It could be seen in their eyes and felt in their handshakes. I believe it could be simply labeled, “love”. The air was thick with it.
As the sun finished setting over the river, two words continuously resounded in my mind: I do.
This was a Moment in America.
