America’s fascination with celebrities has long been recorded. The limited few who gain such notoriety are chased by paparazzi and fans alike…..all in pursuit of a glimpse. Why? What is it about this select group that triggers such hysteria? Is it the perceived happiness and lifestyle that many clamor to achieve? Or is it something else?
I consider them “Dream Ambassadors”. Just think about it: through their actions, whether it be on a sports field, silver screen, stage, or stadium, they represent a skill or story that many of us dream of experiencing ourselves. Through their varied talents we are allowed to escape whatever life has issued us for a limited few moments. Our dreams seem to be augmented by them.
It has been said that without a monarchy to hold in high esteem, we, as Americans, tend to place a crown of wonderment upon our celebrities. Maybe that is true.
A place to experience such devoted interest is Hollywood, California. Upon entering the 3.51 square mile neighborhood, one can easily surmise the industries’ focus: entertainment. As nearly every block possesses a storefront for the rental of sound equipment, props, or cameras. Major motion pictures studios are easily spotted as is the infamous “Hollywood” sign which looms over this enclave like a crown. There is an air of “special” here, as even the local McDonald’s restaurant sports artwork reminiscent of Warhol’s Chanel No.5 bottle!
Having a personal interest in the film industry, I decided to experience the area for myself. One of the main attractions is the well-known “Walk of Fame”. This stretch of granite sidewalk was created in 1958 with 8 inlaid stars bearing the names of well-known entertainers. Today, this expanse of notoriety is several blocks long. Many of the names found within these well-worn stars are recognizable even today as they include, singers, actors, sports giants and performers.
By the throngs of wandering tourists, it is easy to recognize the importance of this neighborhood. The hopeful sighting of a celebrity is an unspoken energy that buzzes through the air. It is that allure to connect, even if for a fleeting moment.
Grauman’s Chinese Theater is another landmark of noted importance. The giant red Chinese pagoda can easily be spotted with its dragon and Ming dynasty lions guarding its entrance. The forecourt holds the plaques of over 200 celebrities who have left their hand and foot prints, along with a signature, since 1927. To be included in this select collection is deemed quite an honor. It is here that admiring fans can perhaps “connect” with one of these Dream Ambassadors even if only through an imprint--- Special, this is indeed.
Alas, even I was able to hold hands with Meryl Streep….well, kind of anyway…..
This was a Moment in America.
